Heavy Rain Warning - Red Area: Marlborough and Canterbury between Ward and Hanmer and southeast of the Awatere Valley, including the Kaikoura ranges Forecast: Expect 70 to 120 mm, on top of what has fallen. Peak rates of 10 to 20 mm/h likely, especially about the ranges. During this period, coastal locations may receive 30 to 60 mm of rain. Freezing level about 1600 metres and snow likely above 1200 metres. Note, further rain is expected through the remainder of Wednesday and into Thursday, and accumulation may approach or exceed warning amounts, and the Red Warning may be extended or downgraded to an Orange Rain Warning Wednesday morning. Impact: Threat to life from dangerous river conditions, significant flooding and slips. Conditions will disrupt travel, make some roads impassable, and isolate communities. Changes: Validity extended to 10am Wednesday. Impact: Action: Do not enter floodwaters and avoid travel. Act quickly to self-evacuate if you see rising water. Be ready for power and communications outages.
